The United Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences, Kagoshima University, is an independent institution offering a 3-year doctoral program in agricultural and fisheries sciences in cooperation with three allied universities: Saga University, Kagoshima University and University of the Ryukyus. We have three major courses namely: (1) Science of Bioresource Production, (2) Biological Science and Technology, and (3) Resource and Environmental Science of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. In the setting of Kyusyu and Okinawa regions, which are positioned as Japan's leading food production base, we offer advanced education and research programs such as 'Tropical Bioresource and Plant Resource Production', 'Animal Resource Production', 'Regional and Global Resource Economics', 'Bioscience and Biotechnology', 'Food Science and Nutrition', 'Advanced Life Science', 'Environmental Science and Conservation Biology', 'Regional Resource Environment Engineering', and 'Fisheries Science on Resources and Environments'. Each student, who passed our entrance examination on February or September, will be enrolled, and receive education and research instructions in one of the allied university where his advisory professor is based. He will also receive research guidance from two vice-advisory professors, in which one professor belongs to another Master Course of the allied university. Through this unique academic program, the United Graduate School aims to develop professionals with highly advanced knowledge, research ethics and a global perspective in the fields of agriculture, forestry, and fisheries. Since our united graduate school was established in 1988, a total of 1004 students, including 539 foreign students, were awarded a Doctorate Degree of Philosophy. These graduates are currently working actively as researchers, teachers and specialists in public and private research institutes and universities all over the world. In closing, I sincerely welcome students to the United Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences, Kagoshima University, which is called 'Rendai' in Japanese. I believe that all of you are highly motivated and are ready for the challenge to achieve your goals. I wish all of you an enjoyable and successful study here at 'Rendai'.
