The United Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences, Kagoshima University (UGSAS-KU, also known as “RENDAI” in Japanese), is a postgraduate school offering a three-year Ph.D. program in agriculture and fisheries sciences in cooperation with three allied universities: Saga University, University of the Ryukyus, and Kagoshima University. Our education and research activities are characterized by the advantage and creativity due to the depth and diversity of our 180 faculty members, covering a wide range of topics in agriculture and fisheries from natural science to social science, which includes the production and utilization of agricultural and aquatic resources in the temperate and subtropical zones, as well as conservation and maintain of environment, elucidation of life phenomena, innovation of food and medicine, establishment of new food supply systems, revitalization of rural communities etc. Throughout our activities, we aim to educate young scientists with professional skills, interdisciplinary knowledge, a global perspective, and a correct research ethics. Furthermore, we have received international students and play a role as an Asian educational base of postgraduate school in agriculture and fisheries sciences. In addition, we also serve as a place for advanced recurrent education for working students engaged in research and development in the above-mentioned fields.
UGSAS-KU was established in 1988. Now, over the past 37 years, we have conferred the Ph.D. degree to more than 1000 awardees; these alumni are actively working as academics, technicians, project leaders and managers in many kinds of domestic and international fields, such as university, research institute, government, and industry. We continue to build an excellent education and research system cooperatively among three allied universities and hope to progress to meet the needs of a rapidly changing digitalized and globalized society.
